🍂 Is Your Kansas Backyard Ready for Fall?

I have some very important backyard news to report: Kansas is starting to cool down. That means fewer days of hiding from the afternoon heat and more opportunities for one of my favorite activities—supervising people while they sit outside.

Fall is one of the best times of year to enjoy an outdoor living space in Kansas. The temperatures become more comfortable, evenings get longer, and suddenly that patio you've been ignoring all summer becomes everyone's favorite room in the house. If your outdoor space isn't quite ready for fall, now is a great time to take a look at what could be improved.

Start with the basics. Look around your yard after a rain and see where water collects. Kansas weather can bring some serious rain, and poor drainage can create problems for lawns, planting beds, patios, and foundations. If you're noticing standing water or areas that stay muddy long after a storm, fall is a great time to start addressing those problems.

Next, think about lighting. As the days get shorter, outdoor lighting becomes even more important. Path lights, landscape lighting, accent lighting, and lighting around entertaining areas can make your backyard safer while also extending the amount of time you can comfortably spend outside.

Then there's the fun stuff—fire features, comfortable furniture, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, and gathering spaces. Fall is when these features really start earning their keep. A comfortable chair next to a fire pit can turn an ordinary Kansas evening into the place everyone wants to be.

Finally, don't forget about planning ahead. If you've been dreaming about a new patio, outdoor kitchen, pool, pergola, or complete backyard transformation for next year, fall is a great time to start the conversation. The sooner you start planning, the more time you have to make decisions about design, materials, layout, and how you actually want to use the space.

So my official recommendation? Get outside, take a look around, and figure out what your backyard needs before the really cold weather arrives.
