Brinx’s Backyard Blog : Planting Smart (Not Just Early)
I know you’re excited to plant. I see you standing in the garden center. I support it.
But March planting in Kansas requires strategy.
Before you plant:
Know your frost dates
Test your soil
Improve drainage if needed
Plan sun exposure carefully
Early spring is ideal for hardy perennials, trees, and shrubs — especially before the intense summer heat hits.
If you’re redesigning beds, adding retaining walls, or reworking landscape layout, this is also a prime planning month. Proper soil prep now prevents plant stress later.
And here’s a pro tip from a dog who digs professionally: mulch early. It helps regulate soil temperature, retain moisture, and reduce weeds before they explode in April.
👉 A little planning now means fewer regrets in July.
