Brinx’s Backyard Blog – February 3: Winter Weather Checkups: Protect Your Backyard & Have Fun Doing It!
Hey friends, it’s Brinx here—your four-legged backyard scout!
February in Kansas is a tricky month. One day it’s sunny and calm, the next it’s snowing sideways, and let’s not even talk about the wind. While I’m busy patrolling the yard for squirrels and sneaky snowdrifts, I’ve got some tips to make sure your outdoor space survives the winter and is ready for a glorious summer.
First off, check your irrigation and sprinkler systems. Even if they’ve been winterized, frozen pipes and unexpected thaws can sneak up on you. Walk around your property, sniff out any exposed pipes or sprinkler heads, and make sure everything is insulated. I like to chase the occasional snowball near the sprinklers—it’s fun, but it also reminds me that pipes need protection!
Next, think about your plants and trees. Winter winds and fluctuating temperatures can stress even the hardiest shrubs. Mulching around roots helps lock in moisture and provides extra insulation. And hey, if you see me rolling in the mulch, don’t worry—I’m just “helping” with the distribution. February is also a great time to plan any new plantings for spring; now’s when you can map out where your flowers, shrubs, and shade trees will go without the summer heat slowing you down.
Outdoor furniture and structures need love too. Patio covers, pergolas, and fire pits can take a beating from ice and snow. Make a quick inspection for damage, tighten loose screws, and wipe down surfaces before spring arrives. I always keep a close eye on the fire pit—I’m not allowed to roast marshmallows yet, but I supervise closely. Safety first, fun second.
While you’re outside doing these winter checkups, it’s the perfect time to start dreaming big for summer. Sketch out your backyard ideas: maybe a pool with a baja shelf, a pool house, a fire feature, or that cabana you’ve been thinking about. Imagine me lounging on a sunny deck, tail wagging, while you sip iced tea. Planning now gives you a jumpstart so your outdoor oasis is ready when the weather finally warms up.
Finally, don’t forget to enjoy the little moments. Throw a snowball or build a mini snow tunnel for me to inspect—I promise I’ll give it the Brinx seal of approval. Keeping your backyard ready doesn’t have to be all work; it’s also about having fun and appreciating the space you’ll enjoy for months to come.
