Brinx’s Backyard Blog – February 9: Winter Wonders & Backyard Planning Tips
Hello again, backyard adventurers! Brinx reporting for duty.
February is still a winter wonderland here in Kansas, and while I’m busy tracking footprints in the snow and making sure no squirrel sneaks past me, it’s also the perfect time to think ahead for summer fun.
Even though it’s cold, your outdoor features need some attention. Snow and ice can damage decks, patios, and stonework. Take a walk around your yard and inspect for cracks or loose stones. I do my own inspection too—usually by sniffing suspicious piles of snow—but I leave the heavy lifting to the humans. Making small repairs now means less headache when you finally fire up the grill and sip lemonade in July.
Drainage is another big one. February melts can create unexpected puddles, which is why I patrol every low spot like it’s a new treasure. Make sure water flows away from structures and garden beds to prevent damage. Installing or checking French drains and grading is easier now than scrambling in the mud later.
If you’re thinking about adding a pool, pergola, or fire pit this summer, now’s a great time to start brainstorming. Sketch layouts, pick materials, and think about how you want the space to feel. Imagine me lounging by a poolside cabana, tail wagging while the sun sets over your backyard oasis—trust me, it’s motivation enough!
One trick most people forget: plan for flexibility. Weather can be unpredictable, so make sure pathways, patios, and features are built to handle Kansas extremes. I’ve learned this the hard way—sliding down icy steps is fun for me, but humans tend to frown.
Finally, don’t forget to enjoy the season! A backyard can be fun in winter too—sledding, snowball fights, or even just watching the ice crystals sparkle. I promise to supervise and offer plenty of encouragement. After all, planning for summer is important, but enjoying the moment is too!
