July 13 - Why July Is the Perfect Time to Start Planning for Fall

Woof! Brinx checking in from my favorite spot in the sun.

While everyone is enjoying pool days, grilling burgers, and soaking up every minute of summer, I have a little secret to share. Believe it or not, July is one of the best months to start thinking about your fall backyard projects. I know... it feels strange planning for cooler weather while it's 95 degrees outside, but that's exactly why the smartest homeowners get a head start.

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that outdoor projects happen overnight. A custom patio, outdoor kitchen, pergola, fire pit, or complete landscape renovation all begin long before equipment arrives at your home. Every successful project starts with thoughtful design, measuring your space, selecting materials, and making sure every detail fits the way your family actually lives. The earlier that planning begins, the smoother the construction process becomes.

Kansas weather is another reason to start now. Fall offers some of the best conditions for building landscapes and hardscapes. Cooler temperatures are easier on newly installed plants, fresh sod establishes more quickly, and families can begin enjoying outdoor fire features and patios almost immediately after completion. Waiting until the first cool weekend of September often means joining a much longer list of homeowners who had the exact same idea.

This is also a great time to take a fresh look at your backyard. Walk around your property and ask yourself a few questions. Do you have enough seating when friends come over? Is there enough shade during the hottest part of the day? Does water drain properly after a summer thunderstorm? Could your family benefit from an outdoor kitchen, a larger patio, or landscape lighting that allows you to enjoy evenings outside longer? Sometimes the smallest improvements make the biggest difference.

As summer continues, don't forget about routine maintenance. Keep mowing at the proper height, continue watering deeply during dry stretches, and inspect irrigation systems regularly. Healthy lawns and landscapes heading into fall recover much faster from the stress of summer heat, setting the stage for a greener spring next year.

I'll keep chasing squirrels for the rest of the summer, but if you're dreaming about cozy evenings around a fire pit or hosting football watch parties on a brand-new patio, now is the time to start planning. Trust me—future you will be glad you didn't wait.
