July 6th – Beat the Kansas Heat (Like a Pro)

Hello, backyard friends! Brinx here.

If you've ever wondered why I suddenly become an expert at finding the coolest patch of shade in the yard, it's because July in Kansas doesn't mess around. One day it's warm, the next it's pushing triple digits, and the sidewalk gets hot enough to make me rethink my afternoon squirrel patrol. While humans are reaching for sunglasses and cold drinks, your backyard is feeling the heat too. That's why now is the perfect time to give your outdoor space a little extra attention so it stays beautiful and comfortable all summer long.

One of the biggest challenges during a Kansas summer is keeping your landscape healthy without wasting water. Early morning is the best time to water your lawn, trees, and flower beds because cooler temperatures allow moisture to soak into the soil instead of evaporating in the afternoon heat. Deep watering a few times each week encourages stronger root growth, while frequent shallow watering often leads to weaker plants. If your irrigation system hasn't been checked recently, now is a great time to make sure every sprinkler head is working properly and watering the right areas.

Shade is another backyard game changer. Whether it's a mature tree, a pergola, a covered patio, or even a well-placed umbrella, shaded spaces can dramatically lower temperatures and make your outdoor living area much more enjoyable. They also help protect patio furniture, outdoor kitchens, and pool equipment from constant exposure to the intense Kansas sun. Even I know that after a long game of fetch, there's nothing better than stretching out under a little shade while everyone else cools off nearby.

July is also one of the busiest months for backyard entertaining. Family cookouts, birthday parties, pool days, and evenings spent grilling all create memories that last for years. Before guests arrive, take a few minutes to clean outdoor furniture, check your grill, inspect landscape lighting, and make sure walkways are clear and safe. A little maintenance now helps everything look its best and keeps the focus where it belongs—on enjoying time together.

Finally, don't forget about your four-legged family members. If you're spending time outside, your pets probably are too. Keep plenty of fresh water available, make sure they have access to shade, and remember that concrete, pool decks, and artificial turf can become extremely hot during the afternoon. I may love chasing tennis balls, but even I know when it's time to cool off.

Kansas summers may be hot, but they're also when backyards come alive. With a little planning and regular maintenance, your outdoor space can stay healthy, inviting, and ready for every barbecue, cannonball, and evening under the stars. Until next Monday, stay cool, stay hydrated, and if you happen to see a squirrel in your yard... let me know.
