June 15th – Drainage Issues After Early Summer Storms

Hi friends, Brinx here. I’ve been monitoring post-storm puddle behavior. Some of them are… suspiciously permanent.

Early summer storms in Kansas often reveal drainage issues that were not visible during drier spring conditions.

🌧️ Common Drainage Problems

  • Standing water after rainfall

  • Soil erosion in landscape beds

  • Soggy lawn areas that don’t dry

  • Water pooling near foundations

🛠️ Causes of Drainage Issues

1. Poor Grading
Water must flow away from structures—not toward them.

2. Soil Compaction
Hard soil prevents proper water absorption.

3. Lack of Drainage Systems
Some properties require additional engineered solutions.

💧 Solutions to Consider

  • French drains

  • Dry creek beds

  • Downspout extensions

  • Regrading problem areas

Brinx’s Tip

If the puddle sticks around longer than I do after a rainstorm, it’s worth investigating.

Why It Matters

Unresolved drainage problems can lead to foundation damage and long-term landscape deterioration.
