June 8th – Mulch Maintenance for Kansas Summer Conditions
Hi friends, Brinx here. I’ve been performing mulch inspections… mostly by lying directly on it.
June is one of the most important months for mulch performance in your landscape beds.
🌿 Why Mulch Matters in Summer
Mulch plays a key role in:
Moisture retention during heat
Weed suppression during peak growth
Soil temperature regulation
Protection against erosion from storms
🪴 Best Mulching Practices
1. Maintain 2–3 Inches Depth
This is the ideal balance for weed control and moisture retention.
2. Keep Mulch Off Plant Stems
Avoid “mulch volcanoes” around trees and shrubs.
3. Refresh Old Mulch as Needed
Decomposed mulch loses effectiveness over time.
4. Choose Quality Material
Hardwood mulch performs well in Kansas heat conditions.
Brinx’s Tip
Fresh mulch smells like “new backyard potential.” I highly recommend it.
Why It Matters
Proper mulch reduces water needs and protects plant health through extreme summer temperatures.
