Brinx’s Backyard Blog – February 16: Preparing for Spring: Landscaping & Lawn Tips
Hi friends! Brinx here, ready for my weekly backyard check-in!
February may feel like winter is never-ending, but that’s exactly why now is the perfect time to prep for spring. I’ve been sniffing around the yard and noticed a few spots that could use some love—and I’m sharing my findings with you.
First up, soil care. Even in winter, it’s smart to plan for fertilization and soil conditioning. I dig around sometimes, just for fun, but humans can test soil pH and decide where amendments will go. Healthy soil is the foundation of a beautiful yard and thriving plants, and starting early gives you a head start when spring blooms arrive.
Pruning is another winter win. Bare trees and shrubs are easier to see and shape now than when the leaves are back. Remove dead or damaged branches, and consider shaping trees for sunlight and airflow. I usually supervise by sitting on branches that are “just right” for inspecting—don’t tell the humans, but it’s one of my favorite jobs.
While you’re out there, make note of areas that could use shade, seating, or privacy features. Sketching these ideas now will help guide patios, pergolas, and other structures for summer. I imagine me lounging under a pergola while you sip coffee—it’s a vision worth planning for!
Also, don’t forget your winter hardscapes. Stone paths, retaining walls, and fire pits can settle or shift in freezing temperatures. Checking these now means fewer surprises when you’re entertaining friends on warm evenings. And yes, I will be supervising any fire pit test runs—it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.
Finally, have fun dreaming! Backyard planning is as much about imagination as it is about work. Picture summer barbecues, pool parties, or quiet mornings with me patrolling the yard—it’ll make February fly by and give you a head start on your ultimate outdoor oasis.
